At Sau Bay Resort & Spa, we’ve always believed that conservation is best when it’s hands-on, hearts-on. Next month, we’re proud to launch the Reef of Fortune, an interactive program designed to bring our guests—and the children of nearby villages—together in a fun, game-style approach to reef stewardship.
What Is the Reef of Fortune?
The Reef of Fortune is a "Wheel of Fortune" style spin wheel that invites participants to engage in one of eight reef-friendly activities, each linked to a specific conservation focus. Whether you’re snorkeling with young recruits from local schools or sharing the experience with fellow divers, every spin unlocks a mission:

Crown-of-Thorns Population Control
Mangrove Transplanting
Exploration Dive

Foundation - Donate to or Participate in our Rainbow Reef Fiji Foundation
Every sector yields a unique, hands-on activity—so guests and village children alike learn, laugh, and leave a lasting imprint on the reef.
How It Works
Gather at the Dive Center. Each morning, our Foundation team sets up the Reef of Fortune wheel at the beachfront. Anyone who wishes to embark on the adventure is encouraged to do so!
Spin & Discover. One by one, participants give the wheel a hearty spin. Where it lands determines today’s mission (by majority) —whether it’s participating in a quick beach cleanup, doing a Dive Against Debris dive, or helping with a mangrove seedling transplant - or another mission.
Mission in Action. Under the guidance of our reef-education specialists,participants are given a briefing of the mission and then its go-time! Some of the missions take place out on the Rainbow Reef or Sau Bay Sanctuary, while others may take place at the resort or at a nearby village.
Share & Celebrate. At day’s end, we reconvene in the Bula Bar. We share photos, stories, and the impact of our collective efforts. We tally up collective achievements—number of coral fragments planted, kilos of debris removed, seeds of mangroves set in place—then celebrate with a well-deserved happy hour sponsored by Sau Bay Resort & Spa.
Why Reef of Fortune Matters
Empowerment Through Play: By gamifying reef care, we transform conservation from lecture-style into an energizing adventure—especially for children, who become lifelong guardians of their home waters.
Cross-Cultural Exchange: Guests learn from village elders and youth about their connection to the reef; kids see the global community caring for their reef. It’s a two-way street of respect, knowledge, and shared commitment.
Measurable Impact: Each spin generates data: how many marine debris items we’ve removed, mangrove seedlings planted, crown of thorn starfished culled, etc.. This helps our Foundation track progress and refine future programs.
Building Future Stewards: Today’s classroom might be a beach cleanup; tomorrow’s might be a coral research project or even a marine lab. Reef of Fortune plants seeds of curiosity that could lead local students to reef-science careers.
